| Employer Identification Number (EIN) Many commercial and most public sector organizations will require an EIN as an essential part of their purchasing process: no EIN, no order and maybe not even an opportunity to register you interest.??
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and is used to identify a business entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. Having an EIN does not mean you have employees. Having a Federal Tax ID does not mean you pay tax.
If you form a company (Inc or LLC) you will automatically get an EIN or Federal Tax ID. If you don't form a company, you are well advised to get an EIN or Federal Tax ID before entering sales negotiations with a commercial or public sector organization.
Based upon the experience of others, if you make application yourself, you may wish to allocate up to half a day for this project - or ExportAction can make application for you.

Many companies and most public sector organizations require the number
for their procurement process: no EIN, no order. That is what Manoj
Patel of UES found when he received a fax saying, "We are trying to
purchase 20 copies (of your software product) for the Oklahoma State
Department of Education. My purchasing people must have a Federal Tax
ID for you, or this won't happen."
